Explain the meaning of young men wearing their pants below their butt or halfway on their butt?

A lot of the younger male generation wear their pants below their butt or half of their butt. I have heard that this was generated from a jail style. Can you explain where it came from and why young men do it? Is it one of those cases where it started off as a bad or taboo symbol but is now just a style? Or are the people who wear it trying to send a specific message... if so, what message are they trying to send?

  • It started with buying clothing you'll grow into and wearing hand-me-downs... You wear your older brothers old jeans before they fit you because your family can't afford to buy new clothes all the time. That turned into people wearing baggy jeans a few sizes to large. Which turned into a fad because it;s really comfortable. Which turned into new lines of urban clothing to meet that demand. Which turned into stupid laws to fine people for having sagging pants. Which turned into companies making skinny jeans, which turned into kids rebelling against the skinny jeans and the stupid sagging pant fines and they just pulled their tight jeans down their ass on purpose to say f*** the world you can't control me. lol They need to bring back baggy jeans so my balls can be comfortable again. I haven't worn jeans in years because of it.

    • Got to love the gay mythology. It's like a racist stereotype like watermelon and fried and people just keep perpetuating it as fact because they hate people that dress like that. They probably never even worse baggy jeans, or grew up in that culture. They're all a decade or so too young to have even been part of the 80's and 90's hip-hop style.

    • It makes so much more sense that everyone would want to look like they take it in the ass, then that they struggled to put together an outfit at good will. People are dumb as rocks.

  • From what I hear, the whole thing started from jails, where dudes who wore their pants low meant that they'd be up for round of fun in the sheets with anyone. However the true meaning got lost on the way and now it's generally believed to be "gangsta" to wear them that low.

  • It's just a style thing. I'm pretty sure guys didn't start doing it to suggest anal sex lol even though that's where it originated from *sidenote: that's f*cking disgusting. what the hell kind of no integrity having man thinks he is entitled to another man's anus because of how he wears his pants?! >:( pisses me off!* They do it because they probably think it looks cool, it's more comfortable, and maybe they don't like tight pants. Maybe they don't like the way it feels wearing your pants all huging your waist and hips.

    • lol wearing your pants so low you have to hold them when you run or else you will fall looks very comfy.

    • @questionner1991, it's really not your place to decide. Get over it lol not to sound bitchy, it's so silly when people complain about guys sagging their pants. First world problems. Who cares. It's none of your business and you don't have to look. Point blank.

    • Not guys in general, no. But as RasmusAiken pointed out, your belongings are taken and your rationed items are carefully thought out to prevent things being used as a weapon. So when you don't have a belt, your pants either sag down or you hold them up. Letting them sag was a sign that you were open to being protected or "owned" by another inmate in exchange for being "his". This is why most prisons now have adopted a 1-piece jumpsuit - your shoulders are the belt holding it up ;)

  • I don't know if it's the same in other countries, but in my country it comes from jail yes. It was seen as a symbol of a guy indicating he's available to have sex with the other men. I think a lot of people who do it now, don't know the real meaning behind it and just think it looks hot or cool. Which of course, it doesn't.

  • I don't even know or care where it came from, it just looks slack and it is slack.

No one wants to see these guy's boxers! It's gross and so off putting. I don't know what woman would want a man who can't use a belt properly?

    • lol, it's not that big of a deal! if you don't like it then just look away. No one's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to look at the guy. :P doesn't mean he "can't use a belt properly", he just chooses not to lol the Constitution says that's okay ;P

    • It's disrespectful to everyone around. It's basically flashing. It makes him walk like a penguin and is so stupid.

    • lol, I disgaree. I think that's a bit dramatic. The penguin walk is hilarious and you have to admit, it makes you chuckle a bit inside. Yeah, I appreciate a man who knows how to wear his pants, but no I don't judge one that wears them differently from what I appreciate.

  • Alessus is right, basically it originated in prison suggesting availability for anal sex... Ironically people think it makes them gangster.

    • Yes, very ironic!

  • They want everyone to know they aren't capable of independent thought, and wild blindly follow gang fashions. Maybe it helps them get admitted to gang membership, for one thing.

  • When you enter many prisons, your belt is taken away from you because it can be used as a weapon or to commit suicide. Hence the saggy pants. Ex-prisoners went back home and continued the fashion statement.

    • This is the factually correct answer. A short Google on sagging will confirm that.

    • You know what the funny thing is. I have seen people with belts do this. Another reason since sexual acts are forbidden to be spoken of or even performed in prison was to let someone know they are available to be "taken."

  • IT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. And it looks really weird. I have no idea why they think it's attractive.

  • Like you said,it started in jail...one person does it,the other has to do it,too and so on.

    Personally,I think it's dumb,but that's just my opinion.

  • This style came from men who were in jail that wanted it up the butt would show that they wanted it up the butt by wearing their pants low.

  • I guess because so many stars did it.

  • Alright, but first u tell ME why girls almost always show cleavage!

  • having no ass to hold the trouser

  • no brains and no self respect, and any woman that wants to be seen hanging out with that stupidity should not be able to reproduce... if this is a gangster thing then why don't you punk ass pussy wannabe's go fight ISIS?

  • Like the person said it came from getting your belt taken away then people followed this outside jails. However some such as myself sag because it's more comfortable. Not to the point where you can see my entire ass but if I took my shirt of and you saw me from the front you'd definitely see the sex lines right up to the point where your pubes just start. I find this most comfortable since it gives my junk space even when I sit and it feels a lot more free than when I wear dress pants up to the waist line.

  • It came from prison.

    It means...

    Never mind.

  • You mean like this? link

Great question. These guys looks like they have an IQ of about 4.

  • it just a thing that started in prison but became a trend in many countries. I don't think it has a message for every person

  • To look as bad as possible lol

  • Because girls like the swagger

    • this made me lol

    • Why? What's funny about it?

    • it's just cute!

  • Prison symbolism for being open to sexual favors for peotection or favors of another kind in return.

Then stupid people knew it came from prison but didn't find out what it really meant, so they started doing it to be "thug".

  • It started in the 70's and rarely does anyone know the real meaning. It is a sign of stickin it to the man. Showing your ass to da man. It is like f*** you to the white man and the establishment. It is ridiculous and low class. If my child was caught doing that he would be stuck wearing leotards to the age of 18.

    • The prison openness to sex came after the thug thing of wearing your pants off your ass to show da man.

    • I used to buy cocaine from a famous Harlem drug dealer and that is where I got my info from. It's laughable the internet thinks the origin comes from "gay trolling" in the prison system. While it is true that at one point in time "gay trolling" existed that started a decade later. I am amazed how quickly it spread to "fashion"/hip hop. It looks so stupid.
