6 Things Men Can Learn from Teen Soaps Targeted at Women

I am a little bit soap-curious. Ok, a lot. It started with Boy Meets World and became a guilty obsession after that. Here are six things that I think men can learn from these shows made basically as a fantasy for women. I also think examples are very helpful when illustrating a point rather than just telling someone what to do.

The O.C.

6 Things Men Can Learn from Teen Soaps Targeted at Women

Ryan: If you are the outsider, embrace it. Don't try to fit in. There is something alluring about the unknown.

Example: Throughout the series, Ryan is constantly on the outside. Some of the girls turn their noses at him for being from Chino, but the "thug" who happens to look like a blonde Russel Crowe never attempts to pretend he is rich and so comes off, in the end, as a tough guy from the wrong side of the tracks fantasy. You can do this too by simply not assimilating into the girl's world, but rather hinting that yours could be more fun.

Gilmore Girls

Jess: Make the girl feel like she is the only one who is special to you.

Example: Jess is a complete ass to everyone in Rory's life including her mother. Yet, he never insults her and even tries to get to know her despite her turning him away. In this way, he becomes the badboy fantasy-- a man who is completly devoted to her even though the rest of the world doesn't understand him. You can do this too by simply being a little bit rude to everyone besides the girl. You want to make her attraction to you somehow forbidden. You aren't the right guy for her her friends tell her, oh but they just don't know the real you...

Gossip Girl

Chuck: Make sure the girl understands why you do the bad things that you do.

Example: Chuck Bass is incredibly snobby and arrogant. He preys on weak minded girls with incredible bodies and is seen as a sort of dark prince. Yet, because Chuck is motivated by the hatred of his father, girls around the world understand why it is Chuck is such a prick and want to be the one to finally change that mean streak. He then becomes the tortured male fantasy. You can do this too by hinting at the demons, which haunt you. As long as the target of your malice is never aimed towards her, many girls will have no problem being sucked up in your dark journey.

One Tree Hill

Lucas: If you're ridiculously handsome, act like a bit of loner/geek/loser in order to make yourself more approachable.

Example: Ah, the good looking guy paradox. Women are more insecure than men generally, so a good looking guy can be enough to make a girl forget how to speak. This can come off to some good looking guys as disinterest. Lucas has only one friend in his school and his half brother is a teen superstar. This makes Lucas the geek but really a superstar fantasy. A handsome guy a girl gets all to herself because he's tucked away in loserdom. You can do this too if you find you're an intimidating specimen by playing down your looks. Dress down occasionally and don't be afraid to show off your knowledge of geek culture on a first date. Such things can make you appear more as a human being to the average girl and less like a demigod.

Dawson's Creek

Pacy: Show off your soft side at just the right time.

Example: Pacy is the inverted version of Dawson. He doesn't have Dawson's WASPY looks or perfect family. He had no real passions in life and has no idea where he's going. He also is very unemotional and motivated by sex while Dawson is motivated by romance. He may come off as the antithesis of love and you may wonder why I didn't choose Dawson here. Dawson gets the attention first because of his long flowing hair and white knight persona, yet over time girls look at Pacy as the one capable of truly loving them. He has a depth that Dawson lacks and while Dawson is more focused on himself, Pacy has the ability to be more focused on you. The key here is to let down your guard and be vulnerable but only at the right time. You want to hint that you could be a great love, but never make it obvious that way she is invited to dream about what you could be...

Friday Night Lights

6 Things Men Can Learn from Teen Soaps Targeted at Women

Matt: The opposite of Lucas, if you're shy then put yourself in the center of attention.

Example: Last one. Matt becomes the quarterback of the Dillon Panthers after being second string for almost two years. Despite being shy, Matt has placed himself in one of the most glamourous if high pressure roles in the entire town that is obsessed with high school football for some odd reason. The opposite of Lucas from One Tree Hill, Matt becomes the fantasy of a shy guy who gets the courage to ask the girl out. Matt makes a girl feel special because he had to overcome so much just to talk to her. He gets extra points for being the quarterback, because girls realize how hard it is for him to handle the social pressure that comes along with the task. The key here is to contradict your introversion with another aspect of you which almost seems to contradict the first part of you. The idea is that you're a sweetheart but also a superhero mainy because you find the courage to do what needs to be done even though it's difficult for you...

While some of these styles wont' work for you, if you see a bit of yourself in one of the characters, it may help to realize what to emphasize and play on. It may seem a bit manipulative to play up something for the sole intention of seducing a girl, but you should be sure that most girls know what they're doing and are consciously seducing you even though it doesn't look like they're even trying.
