Who has to text first? Am I expected to start the conversation just because he was the last one to text? Is this really a game of ping-pong?

I am probably over-analyzing, but I had to think about this when I read someone's comment on GAG. So that someone said something along the lines of "Well, he was the one to send the last text, so you should text him now first." There is this guy I have been on and off talking to for three months. Meanwhile on a simple friendship level. At the beginning there were some make-out sessions involved, but I stopped it because he never really showed much interest in me. Mainly he would never initiate conversation with me. Never text first, hardly ever call. Whenever I reach out to him, he seems excited, always replies immediately, says "it's so good to hear from you, how are you doing blah blah". But never text me first. At one point we didn't talk for several weeks because I got tired of always having to be the one to start the conversation.

Anyway, when I read this comment on GAG, I realized that this guy ALWAYS makes sure that he is the last one to send a text in our conversations, even if it's just a simple " :-) " At that point I don't reply anymore because the conversation seems to be over. I mean what can you reply to a Smileyface? Is it possible that he does that on purpose, making sure he's always the one to send the last text, that way basically leaving the ball in my court? Is there a rule I don't know about that says the one who texted last shouldn't be the one to text first next time?

As I said, probably over-analyzing, but I'm just curious what you think.

Hey i don't think it matters if he was the last one to text the night before, that it not preventing him from saying Good morning or How's your day going or whatever. He definitely shouldn't sit back and make you start every single text conversation, that's not very fair. You could be honest and bring it up with him and say that you feel like you're doing all the work, or at night when he has sent his final smiley for the night, send you're own smiley right back at him and see what he does with that :P

LOL that's a great idea (with my own smiley), I'll definitely try that. I'm having trouble bringing the issue up because I don't wanna seem clingy, and we're not in a relationship, so I can't really expect anything from him

I don't know about this. But based on my experience, even if the guy was the last to text me, if he's interested, he'd text me again the next morning. I don't always initiate conversations because I feel that if the guy wants to talk he'd initiate it (maybe I'm wrong with this idk). So yeah, most of the guys I've texted with, they are the ones that initiate the convo, but sometimes I'd initiate it as well. It all depends on the situation/what the last text was.

I know, right? I think so too, if he was interested, he'd text first, no matter who ended the conversation. But it's just weird that he always seems so happy when I do text him. And he reeeeally sucks at texting...

Well in my life yes this is true! I always am the last one to reply so I exspect them to reply next or the next day I mean but if they don't we won't talk because I assume they don't wanna talk to me!

No prob! Just my personal experience. I sometimes double reply bc I really wanna talk! But you have a point but maybe he's a shy guy all guys are different!! Some like the chance some don't like the games so they are straight up.

Any "texting game" is stupid. There are no rules. Just text him or he tests you, jesus it's not that complicated at all.
