HELP: My crush calls me by a pet name...is this a good sign?

Lately my crush, someone who I do not know extensively, started calling me casually by a nickname. This nickname is not used by ANYONE but my best friend and my family members.

For example, let's pretend my name was "Gabriella" and my family members call me "Riel", as a sort of pet name. Now my crush is slowly calling me "Riel". This doesn't USUALLY happen to my face, rather, he calls me this name around my best friend and even my other close friends who do not use my nickname! He even writes my name down as "Riel", not "Gabriella". He only called me "Riel" once to my face, and it was rather quiet, almost as if he wasn't sure if I'd like being called by my pet name by him.

He picked up "Riel" from my best friend because she says it a lot in front of him when regarding me, and she is pretty close friends with him. I just didn't think he'd pick it up too! And It's just strange especially because he doesn't know me nearly as well as all my other friends.

Not that I'm complaining or anything haha.

So my two questions:

1. Is this a good sign that he might want to get to know me more?

2. HOW do I get him to KEEP calling me by my nickname so he doesn't assume that I don't like it?

him calling you a pet name is cute and it tells he is really into you. its a good sign. to get him to keep calling you by that name, when he calls you it just tell him you like it when he says that, or tell him it sounds cuter when he says it. and if he doesn't say it to your face the best friend who knows him and speaks to him, whenever it comes up tell her you like it when he calls you that.
