If it's a friend or colleague it's nothing beyond greeting in a more warm way :)
If it's someone personal and upclose like family again it's a warm way of greeting.

If it's someone who I'm attracted to but unsure about her situation, it goes the same way as above. Don't want to creep someone out or break her trust.
If it's someone with mutual attraction and it's known both ways then it's going to be feeling each others' body ;)
If it's someone who I'm already in some sort of physical relationship with then I'd probably be feeling her waist with one hand, squeezing her ass with the other ;) and holding her close enough to crush her breasts on my chest ;) lol :D :D

As far as I know, no straight man has ever differentiated between the types of hugs he gives. Whatever is comfortable with her body type and/or height is what we will do.

I wouldn't say those hugs mean something different. What matters most is that you're reciprocating intimacy. Your interest is what makes us feel the hug is worth it in the first place. If you half-heartedly hug us, we may feel disinterested because we think you feel disinterested.
As for which hug is preferred, I'd say the arms-around-my-neck (face-to-face) is best. Because of the women I date, it makes me feel tall and them frail. And I like that. Hope this helps.
