you know I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out and all it did was hold me back from starting with anything. I was determined to find that one instrument I was ment for when in reality if your musical you can play almost anything. I recommend picking up any instrument and just letting loose and pratice using that part of your brain and building confidence with singing, making beats, and creating music. get some bongos, a cheap guitar, or make music from objects around the house, you can upgrade as you go, don't feel like you have to shell out a ton of dough on an instrument because it's gonna hurt every time you see it sitting in the corner not being played. I recommend a guitar as your first purchase, you can play the first 3 strings for doing bass lines. Have fun:)

Well, from MY personal experience, I found that playing the keyboard is the hardest. I just don't have affinity for it. The same with the piano. Even though I can play them very well, it took me a long time to perfect it.
The electric guitar, bass guitar and acoustic guitar were easy for me, the drums were very easy to learn but very tiring to play for long periods of time. I remember when I first started out, my hands being covered in blisters that bled like crazy and having blood clots in my fingers and hands.
And singing is easy for me. I have done it since I was a kid. But, I admit it takes technique and it took me AGES to learn that stupid stomach holding technique.
I would say drums are the easiest. All of them can be very technical and difficult to "master," but nothing can deny the fact that drummers don't have to deal with the complexities of music theory, chords, scales, modes, progressions, etc. ALL instruments deal with divisions of time, "rhythm" so to speak, but only the drums does not have to worry about harmonization or understanding the intricate nature of harmonic calculations.
They're all equally as difficult to play well. If you're talking about attaining just enough proficience to get one by in a basic generic rock band at the low end of the "play-out" level, then I would say bass and drums compete for that dubious honor, with bass holding the lead..

the only instrument I've ever tried to play is drums and that was difficult at certain tempos and times. it's still the instrument I hope to master in due time tho.
i know 2 girls who would choose the drummer out of all of them. I'm a bassist/guitarist but I'm trying to pick up drums. I also play keys, but I can't sing for sh*t, sorry girls
