GAHAHAHAHA! That is the most adorable thing ever! xD
You didn't do anything wrong, don't worry. He's probably shy as well. He's not gonna think anything now other than the fact that you like him. Just be prepared that even if he knows you like him, he's still gonna be shy because part of being shy is not knowing what to do and being too nervous to act sometimes. Be prepared for that.
Shy guys eventually loosen up once they're more comfortable with you, so what you need to do is do what a girl at my workplace did with me - start talking about the weather, then say you like any of the following:
-BOWLING
-Paintball
-Movies
-Eating out
-Laser tag
-Video games
-Whatever you want
and ask him if he wants to come do that with you some time. If he says no, you get to say "please please please" and make a puppy dog face but ONLY ONCE! Sometimes, shy guys will say "no" to an invitation but only because they're scared. If you tell us you REALLY want us to come, and insist on it, we'll change our minds.

Good for you! You showed some guts by making the first move; most women would wait for the guy to make a move. Workplace romances can be really dicey, though; if he doesn't call you in a week or so, it might be best to just move on.
I don't think you did the wrong thing. Good for you for being brave enough to ask him out. I will say be cautioius of workplace relationships. I'm in the middle of a breakup with a guy I work with and it is just horrible. I'm actually dreading going back to work because I don't want to see him. Just make sure he's really worth it before you go down that road.

Haha, cute move. Your best bet would be to ask him directly, though. He's probably expecting it at this point.
