Girls, do you ever get "numb" to compliments, as in, when you get complimented, you don't feel anything anymore?

If you have, why do you think you have gained this immunity to compliments? Is it hearing them too much, not genuinely believing the people that compliment you, or is it something else?

Whether you have or haven't felt this "numbness" to complimentary statements, please elaborate with your thoughts about this idea of "compliment immunity".

I am not going to lie and say that I don't like compliments because sure sweet words and gestures makes you feel alive, admired and good overall especially if you like the person who is complimenting you.

But here is the thing. It has become worse than feeling numb in my case because "numb" makes me neutral. If an acquittance or a friend complimented me, I would love it but if a guy compliments me to pursue a relationship with me and thus trying to woo me, I would start having doubts. Why? because I have been hurt before with listening to all the love words in the world then they turned out just words. So, I start wondering if they do mean those words or do they use it with all the girls or they are just words that aren't meant or felt. Things like that. I am not bitter but I am starting to become more cautious in giving my heart easily as before.

No. It all depends on who's complimenting me, and if I feel like they mean it. If a guy says it to fifteen other girls, it's not gonna affect me on any level. It's nice, sure. But it's not something that would make my day.

If it's a person I like, every compliment affects me in a big way. It'd make me feel good about myself, and I'd feel a bit more confident.

PS: I didn't make a distinction between compliments about looks and about personality. I think that the effect of compliments on looks fades quicker and has much less of an impact than the latter - although a compliment's a compliment. Coming from the right person, I'd love both.

Of course I appreciate compliments and kind words, but at the same time I know plenty of guys will use those to butter me up in hopes I'll sleep with them. I can tell when someone means it and when someone is using them to manipulate. Don't give me a compliment unless you mean it, and even then don't expect me to go crazy just because you told me something I already know. It's nice, but I won't sleep with someone just because they think I'm pretty either.

Compliements I think the guy means? No.

Compliments that do not sound sincere and like something he would say? Yes. I'm immune.

Compliments on my personality usually stick, no matter what is said because guys comment on a girl's personality less than her looks.

A guy who first comments personality and means the comment is a lot more respectable in my mind. I hate guys who just say, "You're hot" "You're sexy" "Damn you've got a nice body". Because they just want sex or relations. They don't care about the girl at all.

To me some girls are immune because:

they don't care

they hear it so often it loses it's value

they want to be valued more than for their looks

they want to be valued for more than being "nice"

Because based on past expereince, people's actions speak louder than words. After awhile, the compliments seem like a bunch of bs and lies because the actions from the person in question don't match up to their nice little compliments.

So basically compliment + bs behavior toward you/opposite of compliment = lie. *shrugs*

A lot of them are ones I've heard before...

I have never had high self esteem and I sort of disregarded the compliments I got...as a result generally speaking I disregard the ones I get now. Genuine ones will always make me go "awww thank you" and blush and creative ones I will always appreciate.

It's the "oh you're pretty."

"oh no, you are really good at that!" etc types that I am immune to.

Not really.

I become what you say "immune" to them if it's from specifically one person who compliments me all the time. I know he means well, but I'd much rather prefer less compliments that mean more. (:

But as for just random strangers complimenting me? That always makes me smile!

And even just friends throwing out random compliments is nice.

As long as it's not one person who does nothing but compliment me (And usually that's for a reason, like wanting sex), then no, I'm not immune.

I wouldn't say that I have become numb I would more so say that it has become the norm for me. Even if the actual words don't come out of their mouth I can already tell what they are thinking from their expression. I really enjoy the you're beautiful and so sweet comments, letting me know I'm beautiful inside and out. I always appreciate someones compliments and even though it is the norm, it makes me feel good every time that that person took the time to make someone elses day.

I'd say I fall under the becoming immune category as far as compliments on my looks go. But compliments regarding my personality or abilities always make me happy. I dunno, I guess there are a lot of nice to average looking girls, so I'd rather be appreciated for what makes me happy and unique.

I voted C.  I know in a lot of cases people may just be throwing them out there...but it still makes me feel good about myself.  I don't get many either so that's part of my reasoning I'm guessing.  I guess people can get numb from them when they either get them far too much, or don't believe there's truth to them so they just stop listening.

I don't ever believe people when they tell me that I look beautiful or pretty. I stopped believing people a long time ago. I think the reason I don't believe people, is just because when I look in the mirror, I don't see how anyone could consider me as beautiful, so I just figure that they are lying to make me feel better.

I don't get compliments all that often, but when I do: if they are unique, specific or random compliments, no, I don't get numb to them at all. Nor from a guy I like or something. It's always nice to be complimented, some just hit deeper :)

Maybe its just me but I always just feel really awkward about getting compliments, especially if its someone I'm close to. I just don't know what to do or say when I am complimented.

I've become somewhat immune to compliments on my looks. It has to be a pretty special circumstance for me to take it really seriously. Personality compliments are a different story.

Compliments to my personality are always welcome, if they are true.  Compliments to your looks are usually just a bunch of bs guys throw out to any woman they want to sleep with.  There is nothing special about them.
