he has stopped hugging you because if he was then it would be very awekward saying that now you know he likes you.
And basing on common sense I'm assuming he ain't a prick otherwise you wouldn't be mates with him in the first place. So knowing that he isn't a prick and knowing that no-one wants to make things more awkward than necessary, he is probably trying not to seem tooo forward.
of course when he told you he liked you he was probably hoping you liked him back and then hugging would be the least of your concerns.
It really depends on how you reacted to him admitting his crush. It sounds like he is embarrassed or that he did not get the reaction he wanted. A crush is called a crush for a reason. Maybe you hurt his feelings, because you do not feel the same. Now he knows that his admission cannot be "unsaid", and he is afraid things will not go back to normal. He does not know what to do.
Do you like him as "more than a friend" ? maybe he thinks you want to keep him in the friend zone, so he keeps a physical distance! If you like him as more than a friend then try to touch is arm or shoulder from time to time this will build comfort between the two of you and he might notice that you want to get closer to him!

And because he likes you and he knows you don't feel the same way, hugging is too awkward for him.
Maybe he's nervous now that you know the intention behind the hugs (romantic feelings)? I would talk to him, especially if you like him back and need to tell him.

He feels awkward giving you a hug because I guess he doesn't want you to think he's a creeper since you didn't tell him you like him back, so if you like him you should tell him, if not then don't worry bout the hugs tho o:
