My guy friend tried to kiss me?

Okay so we've known each other for a couple years and we don't live in the same town and he went MIA for a few months. Anyways he texted me one day hoping to re build our friendship and asked to catch up. He went to get a haircut right before we saw each other and went to the park and got ice cream, but he didn't pay for me... at the park when we were sitting on a bench he tried to kiss me but I said no...later on he asked me about my love life and when I asked him about his he said he hasn't been in anything special or serious for a while but that he would still be open for a commitment or wouldn't back away from one. Soon after we had a really long conversation about our friendship over the past few years together and some nice memories, and asked me what I thought about the time when he didn't text me for a few months but came back in hopes to see me again... and apologized for it. He even asked me about kids...He then said that we need to see each other again this summer. Before he left he said that he was sorry for trying to kiss me, and I told him that it was OK but wasn't expecting it and that I don't usually kiss/hook up with my guyfriends and he was like "oh yeah I know, we're friends". We're both 18.

Why did he try to kiss me? Are we "just friends"?

No, he made a clear attempt to woo you, failed and then backed off so you didn't think he was some sort of creep. He said he wants to meet up again in summer because he's not given up going for you, and will try again when he thinks it's time.

Okay one last question :] when we last saw each other at the beginning of the year (cause we don't like that close to each other), he wanted to "pinky promise", that we'll remain friends. So all this time I thought he just liked me as a friend. And that's why when I saw him again he tried to kiss me and I'm really confused. What do you think I should do, talk to him about it, wait until he brings it up?

I would not wait until he brings it up again. There is a chance he has given up on you, and/or fears that you won't want to remain his friend if he keeps trying to go out with you. If that happens you will miss your chance. You could just start dating him like any other guy and in the process make sure he isn't just looking for a friends with benefits, or you could just talk to him. Depends on what you feel more comfortable with.
