A Period Is Not Just An Excuse

Anonymous

It's not a surprise that some guys assume that a girl blaming her mood, her health, or her actions on her period, is just an excuse because they've never actually had to experience what it's like to have a period and to go through what a lot of women go through each month.

A Period Is Not Just An Excuse

I consider myself rather lucky in that, probably the first 3 days of my period, I get cramps on and off, and then things sort of rattle off until the end, but I had a boss that would be doubled over in pain each day of hers. I found her once in a back stairwell trying to quietly cry because the pain was so bad and as a boss, she couldn't be seen like that in front of others but still had to try to somehow do her job until her period was over. To have to come in and deal with everyone and everything while you are suffering in pain yourself and pretend things are just fine, takes a lot of strength. So many women have to try to do this, not because they have a choice in the matter, but because they have to. I would love to be able to take days off, but I can't, and when the pain is unbearable, I understand fully that it's not just an excuse for the woman who does.

Having a period isn't temporary. It doesn't go away until menopause. From like 12-50 or whatever age your period stops, that's a week out of every month of your life, and even after, our hormones still tend to wreak havoc on us. I don't think any guy can imagine having to deal with intense pains and hormones that take over their body and produce symptoms like acne, tender breasts, tiredness, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, backaches, food cravings, joint and muscle pain, issues with memory, tension, irritability, mood swings, and anxiety for what adds up to about 3 months in total out of the year!

Guys cannot physically understand this, and comparing it to getting kicked in the balls as some kind of one up, is hardly the same thing. You don't get kicked in the balls for 3 months out of your year, let alone on a regular basis. Saying that if you had a period statements, as if you would handle it some other way, makes no sense either because you'll never experience it the way a woman will never experience the pain of getting kicked in the balls, but the both can hurt, a lot.

I do know many guys, especially those in relationships or who have sisters, tend to understand a bit better seeing what all their wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters, go through. They see it's not a joke because they wouldn't want someone making fun of them or accusing them of lying about their health if they were in that kind of pain, but for those who don't, I challenge you to be a little more sensitive to a girl who says, she's dealing with a lot today or if you know she's on her period and she's wigging out, avoid her if you can't handle it, or just offer to be supportive during what for some is a very difficult time out of their control. Pills don't work for everyone, nor are they safe to use for everyone, nor do other natural remedies work for some. Just try to be a little more understanding is all we ask.
