If a guy acts like he think he's hot then I think most girls won't feel obligated to give a compliment. It's like oh, but you already act like you know you're hot so why bother? If a guy gives off a "vain" vibe then don't expect us to give you a compliment. I've always complimented my crushes and I'm also sincere about it. But none of them were ever vain or thought they were hot. Most of them were very flattered. Of course there's also a possibility that the girl is just really shy, but make sure you don't give off a "I think I'm the hottest guy"vibe or come off as arrogant. Girls pick this up from miles away and it's most of the time quite turn off.
I always tell a guy how attractive I think he is. Whether I say it first (if we are already talking, I won't say it to him randomly) or if I say it back after he says it. Most girls only compliment guys when they actually mean it. They don't just say it for the hell of it. Plus, some girls want I play hard to get. Other girls don't want t swell your head. Some don't want to compliment just because you complimented first. It just makes it seem like you're only saying it to be nice because they did. When we mean it, we'll say it.
A lot of guys give compliments to girls only because they want the girl to like them - not necessarily because the compliment is genuine. Girls aren't like that. They don't like complimenting just for the sake of complimenting. So we compliment less often than guys do, but we really mean it when we do.
Also in this case, I'm sure the girl didn't want to seem like she was only complimenting you because you complimented her first. It would have seemed obligatory and insincere.

This one girl walked by and said, "wow... someone's cologne smells really good."
Considering, I am the only guy in class who dresses well and takes the time to put cologne on, I blurted out, "That's me."
She didn't say anything after that and just sat down. She gave me an indirect compliment... and that's the best I ever got from a woman. Mostly guys compliment me to my face about how nice I look or smell -_-
A lot of girls just prefer to sponge attention while doing nothing in return. I drop these kinds of girls like you describe. If you're always calling/texting/saying hi, drop her. It's sad too because most girls don't need to workout to look good and them exercising is a bonus when they're genetics are like 90% of their attractiveness.

Maybe it's the girl that is shy. Or maybe you don't notice it. Or maybe it's just you. If you're attractive girls will compliment you whether you want it or not. And they can word their compliments in some weird and funny ways so they don't get in trouble when the gf is around haha
This generalization isn't true. Hopefully you will encounter girls who compliment guys...because they do exist. It just hasn't happened to you as of yet.
I've been told im hot by girls haha it makes me feel awkward because i never see myself as hot and i dont know how to respond to that because they're out of the blue haha. Maybe its because they just think of us as piece of meat and objectify us 😭

I try to give compliments as often as I feel necessary, I guess the girls you talk to find no interest in that and like attention which isn't technically bad

Some girls are shy about giving compliments. I usually just don't give any unless it's a significant event or reason. Some prefer to call guys hot and sexy while others choose cute and handsome. Most likely she just doesn't want to call you cute and you get offended or call you sexy and you get creeped out. Don't take it to heart.
