  • It's all about the social connotation behind the clothing. They're made of different fabrics, they fasten differently, and they have different designs. Since they're two entirely different pieces of clothing, and they have two entirely different intended uses, the expectations that go along with people seeing a woman in one is entirely different from the other. Lingerie often covers more than a bikini, but you don't see anyone wearing that out and about. A traditional bikini is made official by being able to be pulled through a wedding ring. They're meant to be revealing.
It's just because of society and our expectations and the connotations of the clothing that make us see bikinis vs underwear the way they are.

  • There is only a cultural difference. For some reason society shames seeing women in their underwear but promotes skimpy swimwear. It's dumb. We're being brainwashed and conditioned to follow things we don't understand. It's also considered weird to swim in bra and underwear? I was at one of my guy friends house and we went swimming. I didn't have a suit so I took off my outer layers and they thought I was doing something that was like radically badass. Wtf? So I don't know man. Personally I don't care if I'm seen in bra and underwear any more than a bathi ng suit. But people more culturally conditioned do

  • Because society has labelled bra and panties as "underwear and only to be seen in private"...

  • Honestly there is no difference except one is made to wear to show people the other is made to cover up.

Also the fact that it's more awkward when you're the only one half dressed and less awkward when everyone else is doing it too.

  • Ridiculous reason for being up set. You see more of her in a bikini than in most bras and panties.

  • I have no shame in either, I look good (:

  • It's what the clothes she represents.
Underwear is called UNDERwear for a reason. When you walk in on a girl in underwear, you walk in on her privacy, you just managed to catch her in an intimate moment of being revealed.

But with bikinis it's different, she wants to be revealed, she has prepared hersrlf physically and mentally. Clothes have a more symbolic meaning to them nowadays rather then to keep warmth. You don't go in your pj's to work and you don't wear a suit at home.

I hope that helped (but remember not all girls are like that, I prefer swimming in a one piece bathing suit)

  • I feel like that being in bra and undies with someone is counted as a much more intimate and personal thing. Whilst bikinis were made for the public eye, lingerie is a more private matter :) my thoughts on the situation anyways

  • i m with you on this one.. i dont get it either..

  • Yeah its silly that people are embarrased in underwear and bra but not a bikini, its the same thing

  • Because they both have different meanings

  • I'm just as confused as you, my friend. I still don't understand it myself. Especially since underwear tends to cover more than bikinis do. It makes no sense what-so-ever.
