Double Standards for boys and girls?

FORT MYERS, Fla. - An online video shows a prank some would say went too far.



Three young girls from Dunbar Middle school videotaped themselves tackling an 11 year old boy and taking off his clothes. The group can be heard laughing at times and mocking the boy as he struggled to break free.



"He stopped to chat with his friend and they thought it would be funny," said the boy's mother.



The child who we are not identifying is a 5Th grader at Ray Pottorf Elementary. His mom says she only found out about the video when her older son, who goes to school with the girls, said his friends had seen the video online.



"You take his clothes off in broad daylight, in the middle of a busy neighborhood and then you post it on YouTube to tell all your friends look at what I did. Crime or not, it shouldn't happen," she added.



Fort Myers Police says the girl would have faced misdemeanor battery charges, but that the boy's mother has refused to press charges. She wants the girls' parents to hand out a punishment instead.



The video has since been removed by YouTube.

- If the situation was reversed, and it was 3 boys that did this to a girl.. it would be a much bigger deal. People would be trying to send the boys to jail and definitely press charges.

So what does everyone think.. is there a double standard for boys and girls when it comes to things like this?

You said it yourself, the mother refuse to press charges. That in itself is a closure, whether or not her son agreed to it, as it all comes down to closure. Boyfriends abuse their girls, yet some girls refuse to press charges, thus the boy goes free and comes back and beats the living hell out of her, puts her in the hospital yet still she refuses to press charges. Happens all the time. Judges are to blame in part, as they let the abusive boys out early, thus the girl wants to avoid excessive retalliation, in part because some times her boyfriend is a police officer -- so why bother? This is one of those many cases where the law thinks it's better than the social awareness of the individuals involved, but such is live.

All that aside, I understand how if genders were reverse the parents/neighbors might react differently, but that's not the case here. The MOTHER made the decision, so blame her, not women as a whole.

He's is drawing attention to the double standard, not women in general. Just because the mother refused to press charges, doesn't mean closure was achieved. When it is made apparent that a guy is abusing a girl does that mean closure is achieved? No, the fact that abusive guys go free points out a clear flaw in the judical system.

It is a double standard by what you wrote, but by not viewing the video my self or all of there reactions to it. I can't be for sure on that. There are so many different angles-

The standard is still screwed up. When I was about 12 I was beaten naked by a couple of tough bigger older teenage tomboy type girls. Fortunately this was before cheap video or youtube so only their friends saw it. The same thing though, the counselors at the camp thought I must have done something to deserve it. The girls dragged me out of a shower building and kicked me repeatedly in the testicles so hard I was on the ground almost throwing up. There was a gang of girls watching and laughing. The camp just figured boys were to take care of themselves.

The boy instigated the whole incident. I know it for a fact because the boy is my grandson, palek III. He came to be a few months back and said, "You know gramps, I've tried everything with this chick I like, but I can't get any action." I whispered 3 words in his ear, and said, "Say those 3 words to any woman in the world, and without blinkin an eye she'll rip all your clothes off and rape ya". The news didn't report the whole story.

i am afraid sir, the girls now have now had their names published on the net. people were very angry with the girls and felt justice needed to severed. I think was on site a called voice for men. good luck hope your grandson is doing well.
