If a girl strikes up a conversation with you can I take that as a sign of interest?

Every once in a while I'll have a girl start a conversation with me out of nowhere if we're close to each other or waiting somewhere or in line, etc.

Sometimes it's obvious, like I was waiting at the bus stop and a girl commented on something on my phone, and I knew she wanted to talk to me and was interested because of the big smile on her face and how she kept the conversation going.

Other times it's not so easy. Like in class, if a girl sits next to me and asks questions about the class, I wonder if she actually wants to know about the course or if she's trying to find a reason to talk to me and hopefully I'll continue the conversation with her.

So if a girl approaches YOU and talks to you about something, take it as a sign of interest?

I mean if a girl asks me for directions to the library I usually assume they just need directions. But how do I discern the difference between that, and a girl sitting next to me in class asking about what's going to be on the test, if she's interested or not.

I guess the girl in class could look up that information on her own time, but she chose to ask me instead. The girl asking for directions needs help right away from anyone...anyway what are some opinions? It seems like something too subtle to be a sign of interest, I mean it's just casual conversation girls do that with everybody.
