It was almost certainly for attention. They hoped you would notice them. They were likely too shy to strike up a conversation and hoped you'd start one. That or you're just overthinking it and they sat there for no particular reason then moved for a reason that has nothing to do with you.
They just wanted to see if you'd make some gesture toward them,and when you didn't, they felt uncomfortable about being next to you.
well, if you don't smell bad or something I can only guess its maybe cause they wanted to get to know you/talk to you but chickened out or were waiting for you to talk to them?

Where do you normally sit? If you sit towards the way back maybe they just want to move closer to the lecturer?
They probably just took a seat then moved because they had a friend somewhere in the classroom.
