I think funny things are funny, regardless of what gender is saying them. Most girls I know that are "funny" just recycle funny things they've heard elsewhere...which is fine. Plenty of guys do that too, but the people that really stick out to me are the ones that can just say funny things on the spot that they just made up. Perfectly timed movie/tv references can be good too but don't go overboard with those like a lot of people do.
Everyone has different senses of humor though, so if you are going to try and improve your humor skills, try and pick what kind you can pull off the best. For example, I really like it when you think you know where someone is going with what they are saying and then they just say something that you don't see coming. Anthony Jeselnik is really good at that.
Try watching a lot of standup comedy (men and women...but mostly men :p) and see which comedian has the humor you like the best and think you can pull off. Then watch all their material and google other comedians like them. There's also a book that is really helpful called Comedy Writing Secrets that breaks down humor and it shows that being funny is a skill and pretty much anyone can improve theirs.
Good luck and don't stress out about it. Most guys would be fine with a girl who isn't that funny as long as she has a good personality otherwise.
Funny is fine. It's just the vehicle for a woman to make me feel comfortable around her though. Truthfully I don't think most women are particularly funny as such. I like it if she shares the same type if humour as I do as I feel it helps her understand me better.
The most important thing I think for a woman in terms of personality is to be compassionate and caring. Whether she's looking after a friend with a broken heart or next doors cat, I just want to see her show real empathy and really care. How can you not love someone like that?
I'm a big believer that while instinctively women look for a protector and provider , men not only want a woman to be a good mother , but sometimes we need looking after too. I need to know that when everything goes wrong and the sh*t hits the fan that she will be there for me. In turn I will be there for her and do whatever I have to in order to get us back on our feet.
I think either a person is funny or he/she isn't. It's hard to dissect humor and even harder to explain how to be funny. (By the way, it is OKAY if you are the only one who gets your jokes. I crack myself up all the time, I am a huge fan of me. I am probably tied for second place for Funniest Mofo I Know.)

I like a girl who does have a good sense of humor, I think its pretty important to be able to have a laugh about whatever. I also prefer more "quiet" girls cause I'm like that, not into loud always has to be out partying type.
As for your question about being funny, it all depends on the person. People have such different humors there is no way to tell straight off. I do think being a sarcastic and then laughing works, pointing out funny things that happen when your out and on TV for example.

Well, every guy is different, but for me it goes something like this... I really like intelligent girls. By that I mean girls who could understand my jokes, occasional sarcasm. and with whom I can talk about everything. Maturity is also important. I just can't stand childish emotional outbursts that come with no apparent reason, I just can't deal with whiny people... Then there is also a sense of humor... You don't need to be an stand-up comedian to get me to laugh, just be yourself and try to have some fun. And last, but not the least, I need to feel appreciated. If I am trying, and investing my time and energy in this girl, I expect the same from her, I don't like all that power shifting thingy in any relationship...
So that sums it up. As you can see, these are not the traits that an ordinary girl can't fulfill, it is just plain simple traits that are important, at least for me... Hope this helps a bit :)
Confidence is actually more of a quality women desire. Men are generally (at least initially) based on whether they're physically attracted to you. But I suspect desirable personality traits vary from man to man.
Personally I really love sense of humor. The type of interaction I like to have with girls is the playfully teasing style. If he initiates touching you, make sure you touch him back. Doesn't have to be like sensual rubbing or anything. Just light taps on the hand or a friendly slap on the shoulder if he teases you.
Girls who are confident and independent when met with society, and at the end of the day cute and cuddly in your arms. As long as I see the person trying to be funny is enough.
I love a girl who is shy but has a great sense of humor.
