Why do outgoing guys suddenly get shy/quiet around girls?

If you meet a guy at first and you both hit it off with each other, can maintain good conversations and he is always happy/friendly around the girl. But after a period of time he suddenly gets quiet/shy and becomes a bit awkward to start conversations with the girl. Why does this happen? Is common for guys to do this if they realize they may have shown too much interest in the girl they like?

Guys feel that if they show to much interest, then this scares off the girl, being to into them to soon is weird, so when they realize that they might be doing this, they shut down their genuine behavior , and start to act as if they don't really care, in the hope they are not showing to much towards the girl they like, so just tell him you liked him when he shows how much he likes you, then he might relax and become confident your not going to get weirded out by it lol,x

It seems that he just run out of things to say, or he suddenly got self-conscious when the girl is around.

We guys feel awkward sometimes when there is a girl around... we think about what will she think about me.. she may get turned off..etc. so we become more conscious..
