I mean if you're happy and confident with yourself then why is it a bad thing? In my opinion it's better to be a narcissist than to have low self-esteem. There is nothing wrong with being vain.

Narcissist is a very big extreme and extreme anything in general is bad. Narcissism is a personality disorder. Narcissists will use other people for personal gain, expect super special treatment, extreme arrogance, expect lots of attention, not care about how people feel(not to be confused with not caring what others think, and they think they can do no wrong. These are just a few issues with narcissists. Narcissists are self centered people. Narcissists trick themselves into thinking people envy him when he/she is envious of someone else.
A lot of people can be narcissistic at times but full blown narcissists are just plain annoying. Narcissism is on a rise with all this social media going around as it is. Facebook, twitter, and all that stuff is just a bunch of "Look at me!"

In modern understanding being a narcissist isn't so much about confidence as it is slang for being self-important. The fact that you failed on both terms, the slang and the definition with actual application, is a tad ironic for such a question really. You would think you'd know what you're attempting to discuss before you open your mouth.
Also, you clearly do not know what being "vain" is either as it is by definition a negative trait. So there is actually always something wrong with being vain, regardless of your interpretation of reality, simply because it is by it's very nature a bad thing.
Too much "critical thinking" these days in the youth!
OK WOW. there is a difference between displaying small signs of narcissism and having narcissistic personality disorder (narcissim) which is far beyond being vain. fall in love with a narcissist, have them destroy you and break your heart, then say there is nothing wrong with being a narcissist. They are cruel, they lack empathy and a conscience. I think you are using the word narcissism lightly.

Narcissism is excessive self love, it's not a synonym for confidence. Vanity is the same, EXCESS. It's the excess that's damaging, to yourself and especially to those around you.
Narcissism vs. Low self-esteem - neither is better than the other because they're both unhealthy and unbalanced.

Narcissists tend to think they are better than anyone else and they can do no wrong. They tend to treat other people like crap. That's what's wrong with it. I have met a legitimate narcissist. He is not a nice person. Feeling good about yourself is great. Having a superiority complex is not.

Narcissists tend to hpld themselves above everyone else which is a very bad move, especially in life as a whole. You'll never succeed if you think you're too good to do what others say or do certain things.

People who are vain annoy the hell out of me, I've known people before who check themselves out during conversations and it makes me physically repulsed.

There is a vast difference between being confident and being a narcissist. *Good* people who are confident in themselves show humility, too. It is human nature to be disgusted by narcissistic behavior, and there is nothing wrong with feeling that way.
Odds are you think far more highly of yourself than anyone else thinks of you. Consider that for a while and you may find that humility that will balance you into a good person. Until then, you are the only person who thinks you are one. -

It's not a bad thing to be a narcissist at all. Some people just want that special attention from that narcissist person that's why they always bug him/her and try to cajole him/her that what that person is doing is a bad thing.
