I used to have this problem and it drove me nuts! Unfortunately I was horrible at dealing with it until I watched flight of the concords and I was watching the episode where Brett falls in love with the girl who works at "the cheap zoo" and constantly buys 2 goldfish to get one free so he can have the opportunity to talk to her (although he is so stage fright he never does) and suddenly I was like omg that's ____ and I realized all the stupid little things my guy did that I had originally didn't realize meant anything, but suddenly realized to him the did. Oddly enough flight of the concords became like a replacement for sex in the city for me in how to deal with my guy. Unfortunately not to long after I discovered fotc I moved away and it proved to be to little to late, but I think things would have gone so much better if I had watched it sooner and had opened up my eyes to all the subtle things that were so meaningful to him that I didn't even notice :)
Sorry that I can't be more helpful since I've been there myself and know how difficult it can be, but this was strangley the only thing I found that helped lol

just be yourself and give him more time to get comfortable. he might actually like you talking to him about things and sharing what's going on in your life. maybe you could find activities for both of you to do together and that way you're spending time together without any pressure to talk. I hope this helps.
