This has always confused me, why exactly is it an option? If someone is feeling depressed or suicidal I don't think they should be reported for it. This is an advice column after all. We should probably try our best to talk to them and help them feel better, right? Why exactly is this an option if you wanted to report a question?

So the reason we remove posts that have suicidal tendencies are not for punishing or reporting that user but it's actually the opposite: because we care about our members.
When we remove such a post that member gets an important message. That GaG is concerned about them and that we would like to help them. We refer them to trained counselors at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline who are available 24/7 by giving them a number to call: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The call is free and confidential. We want our members to remain safe and continue to reach out so we also ask them to please not to do anything to hurt themselves, and give them more resources such as Lifeline, http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org so they can get the assistance they need.
So that's why it's an important option to have, so we can do our best to prevent a tragedy from happening and let them know we're listening.
Thanks for asking such a relevant question.1
