I follow people who I've seen around and think they're cool. If they don't follow back it could be just the fact that they forgot or something, and I tend to avoid adding private profiles unless I've become quite fimilat with that person. I don't tend to care much if they don't follow me back. What about you?

On twitter, facebook, instagram it is considered something that is important because to ignorant teenagers it determines your life's worth and popularity etc.
However, in this community, the main function and purpose of this website is to Q&A and share opinions. It was never really intended for social purposes in the beginning therefore the follow/followback mechanisms on this website is different than of the social media.
The way i see it, is that on this website, if you find someone interesting or is involved with interesting topics or activities and you'd like to keep up to date with them, then you follow them (maybe because they're your friend or because they offer great advice or ask though provoking questions etc.) You follow them for your own purpose and benefits not really to appease them.1

I don't really care it's not like I personally know the person. I just follow them because I like what they have to say or ask or I think they're an interesting addition to the site so I can be update to answer questions I also have an interest as well as see what they have to say.
But I'll be honest when I joined I did care lmfao. GAG was like MySpace/Facebook to me and I loved getting follows. Now I don't follow back a lot of people or only follow people for a good reason.1
