Do they actually check up on what the mods do or can they just do whatever? Also how had is it to become one? Hard enough to stop people abusing the power? I doubt it.

Moderators have very little power, are not paid, and are not something you should be worried about. If anything, you have just as much "power" as they do. If you find a moderator abusing their duties, simply contact the administrators. But all in all, they are no different than regular users, albeit a few authority options, so unfortunately they are just as able to become out of control as we are.1
