The Sins the Shy Sheathe

Shyness is seen as a universal social faux pas in most circles in America. The comment “he never talks” or “she’s so…quiet” cuts like a dagger in the hearts of many a shy person. Introverts either are mostly un-phased by it or see it as the advantage that it can be. Below are some ways shyness is used to great effect in dating.

Cute hides Clandestine

The Sins the Shy Sheathe

For many, shyness is cute. This is a large reason why girls are called out on being shy far less than men are and many can survive their whole lives without having to break out of it. Regardless of gender, no one usually suspects anything nefarious from the shy person who seems too afraid to talk. Yet, I’ve seen both shy men and women who have a lot of hidden cards up their sleeve and love getting their way. They aren’t the cute little shy panda you want them to be, they’re actually very often full of themselves and don’t think about others nor care about them as much as the typical person.

Shyness hides ego

The Shy also don’t seem to have an ego, but let’s consider this…what do a shy person and a narcissist have in common? They both assume everyone’s looking at them when they walk into a room. The shy person is overwhelmed by their unrealistic sense of importance to others, while the narcissist is sustained by it. We feel for the shy boy or girl who thinks everyone is judging them, but no one ever admits the obvious—no one is thinking about them. They aren’t important to that many people and the people who do think about them wouldn’t judge them for slipping or saying something wrong or whatever the shy person fears. Yet, to the shy man or woman the fate of the entire civilization hangs in the balance of their every step and misstep. I’ve heard shy people say they feel like they’re walking on a tightrope when they’re in large groups, but to me it’s in large groups that most people blend into one another and are forgotten. The Shy may just have the biggest ego of all in terms of convincing themselves that people are interested in watching them.

Fear creates authority

The Shy never do the chasing. In this way, they set themselves up to be in the coveted role regardless of which gender they are. As a matter of survival, they learn advanced social techniques for making people come to them. They are the masters of talking to someone and playing it cool because their fear prevents them from ever revealing much of their feelings for the other person. Sure, they hardly if ever have that Romeo or Juliet moment where they do a grand gesture, but they make up for it in forever being a bit outside of your grasp.

So don’t underestimate The Shy
