I used to go to the gym for hours, seven days a week and it would never happen... yeah there might be good looking women but I personally find it hard to get hard when i'm exercising or standing up for that matter. Anyway it's not a really sexual place to be if you're actually exercising, it's not like i'm over watching the women do stretches.
Mid lifer- just turned 50. In 20’s , I’d get erection when training for over 20 minutes jumping rope. I believe it’s friction that causes erection for some men regardless of age. Some men are super sensitive while others not so much. If I jumped rope over 20 minutes, there were a few times I’d orgasm as well. Recently, I returned to gym and after 30 minutes on stationary bike, I frequently get erections. So, I’d say combo of blood flow to region, friction of clothing, happiness level, sensitivity, and perhaps frequency of sex.
Boners and erections are completely random in men. The only time a man gets a expected boner is when he thinks of sexual things. Doesn't mean if there's a hot woman it's a guaranteed boner, we dont get boners from looking, only thinking. We can even get random boners around other men because we do and can, most of the time, we can't control it.

I never ever get boners, lots of guys wear spandex and you may just be seeing their dick bulge. I've never seen a boner in the gym. there's a big difference between a bulge and a hanging boner.
