If a girl initiates conversation with a guy

And tries to keep the conversation going when the guy stops talking, is it safe to say that she's interested? or is she just being nice?

ummm, stop and think. how does it feel to you? if there is some chemistry that you can sense, then I doubt it would be her just trying to keep the conversation going and more of her being into you. I guess just pay attention to subtle mannerisms the next few times you two speak to each other. but if it was just one time you spoke with her, that may be hard to say. if you never respond back, she will most likely not enjoy talking with you in the future. although, some girls are just plain nice ;)

If I initiate conversation with a guy, it may be just to be polite. However, if I continue to try to keep the conversation going, even after he gets quiet and stops talking, it's usually because I'm interested in him. It takes some effort to keep coming up with things to talk about, and if she is trying then she's at least got to be interested in what you're saying.

If she initiated the conversation, and tried to keep it going after the whole "dead quiet awkward fizzle" point, then she probably is interested. Just take it with a grain of salt, because that's not always the case. Odds are though, there is, like an 89% chance she's interested.

Well my girlfriend is very friendly to just about everyone so it might seem as if she likes them but that's just how she is, but I think generally saying yes it would probably mean there interested.

if she was the last one to send an IM before the quietness, and she tries to remedy it by talking to the guy, then she's interested. if the guy sent the last message, then maybe she's just replying to be polite.
