Girl suddenly stops all signs of interest?

What does it mean when a girl suddenly stops showing interest in a guy? She used to stare, try to be in close proximity with a guy, try to get his attention with random comments. The guy starts to show interest for a while. Then all of a sudden all this stops and she doesn't seem to take notice at all. could she really have just lost interest? Or was she playing hard to get?

She might have lost interest, thought I doubt it happens too fast. When you say suddenly? How much has it really been? Two days, a week, 2 weeks, 3 months?

Anyway, it might sometimes happen that the girl shows signs of interest without realizing it.
(You have to understand that lots of people would rather not talk about their feelings in the open. It's not like in the movies. Feelings can get painful if not handled correctly and some think that keeping it to themselves would be the best way to avoid getting hurt. So this is why girls and guys would rather play it safe until they are 100% sure that the other person is also interested in them). So the girl is interested and acts like that but she is not aware that others can see it.

The guy picks up on those signs and flirts back, at which point the girl understands that the guy might have noticed something.

The girl becomes more self-aware and stops doing all those things as she does not want for her feelings to be "exposed".

She might not have lost interest in you, but prepare for a hard time of trying to read her. It's going to get exhausting at times.
Just keep being friendly with her and try to see the slightest "anomally" in her behaviour.

Suddenly just means all of a sudden.
Anyway this happened last year. This year, she started showing interest again. I showed interest back and things seemed to be going well. Then after a month of this she suddenly stopped showing interest again. Confused, I decided to just ask her out. However, she rejected me. So now I'm trying to figure out what has been going on

Guess you will be ok now that you got it out of the systems and she said no... unless she starts showing interest in you again. Then that will fuck you up completely. Been there. I just shut her out for good. I did not want to get some kind of mental damage because of her so I just minded my business.
I would say that I know what I've seen and I saw her being interested, just that she was afraid of something. Plus I think her bff confessed to my crush that she likes me and so forced my crush to step aside. She rejected me when I asked. Really sick story. Don't want to remember.
Did you actually tell her how you feel about her though or just asked her out and she turned it down?

Indirect no, meaning she did not actually say "no", but something like "i have other plans for tonight"?
I am curios, did she seem shocked or panicky when you asked her out OR was it cold blooded with no emotions showing on her face and no nervous gestures (bitting lips, snaping fingers, looking away) ?
strange that she shows interest and then when you do your part she just runs away. Did she date someone else after she first shut you down last year?
