Why are some naturally good at playing an instrument, while others suck?
Etc.
Is it a genetic thing?
No, there is no genetic link. If there is, it's a new discovery. If genetics ever offers an explanation, the debate between nature and nurture is almost dead, nature wins. My conjecture is there will never be a genetic link.
The brain is wired for art. When we are young children, as we learn, our brain starts "the wiring process." Our brain makes connections, what we learn and how we learn strongly influence "the wiring process," how the wires get connected. The art plugs are in the right brain and the logic plugs are in the left. This leads me to believe that artistic talent is a more of a phenomenon of nurture.
For instance, my parents forced me to take piano lessons at a very young age. I can play music very well. I can write the sheet music for a song and I only have to hear the song once. Playing music and writing sheet music are very different. When I play music, I don't "think" about the notes. When I write sheet music, I have to "think" to write the notes. Playing is right brain; writing is left.
Other than music, I have no other artistic talent.
There is still plenty to argue in the nature v nurture debate; ability is a big question mark.
I think talent is genetic as in its in your DNA, but its not necessarily inherited. There are some people who are clearly better at things than others. When it comes to art especially, you are either born with talent or not. You can learn to draw or paint from someone, but you can't learn how to be a great artist. Even though its in your genes, the human genome and the process of inheriting DNA is so complicated that artistic talent isn't simply a single gene that you can get from your parents. Being talented is just a lucky coincidence that your DNA happened to arrange itself in the right way.
i believe it is largely inherited. my mum's an artist; my dad is a photographer; I'm generally pretty good at art. it came naturally, my artistic abilities were usually a year or so ahead of my classmates...but in gym class I sucked lol
athletic skill tends to run in the family, musically talented parents tend to have musically talented kids, and art seems to go that way too.
but it's not all genetics, some it might be, but I don't think they have found the "art gene" I think it's mostly the parents who nurture it into the kids.
artistic parents are probably gonna have their kids finger painting at a very young age and they're going take their kids to museums and give them brushes and colored pencils and all sorts of things that encourage artistic development.
a dad who was a star baseball player in collage will start playing catch with his kid just about as soon as he can walk.
and musical parents are going to sign their kid up for clarinet lessons at the earliest opportunity.
i think its just inherited. I've always been artistic and creative naturally, never had to do anything about it. I don't know where it came from neither of my parents are like that. but on the off side I think "differently" and I'm not like a lot of people so its hard to meet others that I have similarities with. but you know what part of it could be nurture instead of nature, because I was always coloring as a kid...that might have something to do with it
I would say a bit part of it is genetic.
The talented person's brain is wired just a bit differently than everyone else, and he/she sees things a bit differently too, allowing for greater skill in a particular area. But passion for the skill as well as a desire and will to practice are key too. Some people are just fortunate to have received a genetic "head start".

I would say it is not genetic at all. I play three instruments relatively well. I am the only one out of the 5 people in my family with any musical talent. Being a music teacher I can tell you that there is such a thing as being naturally talented. I think it's just like anything else in life that people are good at. Some people are good at skateboarding, or drawing, or business sales.
My mother was a fantastic artist & I can't even draw a stick figure!
I do take after my father as I make people laugh, I'm easy to talk to & people do seem to enjoy being around me.
i was a great arts student-i got A's pretty much since elementary school till highschool but gave up on it.
maybe. My grandfather and my uncle can sing really good, but my dad can't. then again they also play guitar, which my dad didn't. Maybe its genetics, but skips a generation or something :/
it is genetics . its to do with parts of ur brain.
it's how the body works
