hahahaha so cool seeing this question! It is HOT as hell! And I don't see it as a regular bikini either. It is metal in gold/brown color and has those... shall I call it scarves? hanging in front of her legs and and butt. The woman wearing it is Princess fucking Leia (I love you) and it was the only time we could see some skin from her. Not to mention that the original trilogy of Star Wars barely had any female characters, let alone sexy one's. It is the most iconic female Star wars costume. Certainly not the only one. There are also female Twileks who are all intergalactic strippers.
So since we have Harley Queen in Batman, Eowyn and Arwen in Middle Earth, Lois for Superman, Bunny Bulma in Dragon Ball... the list can go on and on... so can we have Princess/slave Leia in Star Wars.

I think Star Wars was so huge to kids in general back in the day that anything it did was huge. Just based on the age of the audience maybe it was their sexual awakening or something?

The first Star Wars, it was evident that Carrie Fisher was quite unfettered as there would be a fair bit of bounce happening... the sexuality was toned down in Empire Strikes Back but returned with Return of the Jedi, with that bikini. It was an era of television and movies where whilst females were empowered on screen, they were made more prominent by their sexuality.
Eh, one can't help what one finds hot (when I was, what 11?). She has some character anyway. It's not like she's just a physical shell. One of my girlfriends looked *a lot* like her. I couldn't help shagging the arse off her.
The little kids of (1977) Star Wars were teenagers by (1983) Return Of The Jedi, and they were starting to feel their first stirrings down there in their pants.
