My boyfriend says really sweet things to me when drunk, should I believe it?

My boyfriend sober is more quiet, he is not one to compliment that much, or be lovey dovey either. He's not cold though. When he gets drunk he says how much he loves me, and he looks at me like he is so in love with me, and he'll even say "im so lucky, and im so in love with you baby." He also talks about marriage and saying he's gonna marry me, when he's sober he barely mentions marriage.

He's super like in love and lovey dovey when drunk lol, but when he's sober he's just nice and normal and says the normal "I love you" to me. He also said "you're gorgeous green eyes are alluring, and when you do your makeup, oh my god! You blow all of these girls out of the water!" It's funny cause when he is sober and I do my makeup and get dolled up he'll just be casual and say "you look nice babe." Sometimes he doesn't say anything at all. So should I believe him when he's drunk and saying these things? Or is it all BS? I will pick MH. Thanks.

When I read your post I thought I must have written it except I couldn’t remember!
Your boyfriend sounds exactly like mine! Super loving dovey and sweet when drunk, he’s told me the most wonderful things anyone has ever told me non stop for hours when drunk, only to be normal when sober! Not cold but not like when drunk either!
He also mentions marriage and moving in together but when sober he’s silent! I dont get it either!
He told me he’s like that because of a life time of conditioning to not get hurt later if the woman isn’t reciprocating his words (or something like that) but we’ve been dating for almost two years and I reciprocate his words and feelings all the time. But I guess decades of conditioning are hard to rewire.

I’d say let’s continue to be our sweet and awesome selves, never stop telling them all the sweet mushy lovey dovey things back (and also initiate them all the time) and hopefully they will bend and become trusting and relax and chill and they will start saying those wonderful words that we crave all the time, no alcohol needed!

This is tricky, because on the one hand it could just all be because he's drunk, on the other hand it might be that when he's drunk the wall in his mind that sober him hides behind gets broken down and he can express himself more easily. I have a male friend who had the same issue -he was shy and thought he had to drink to make people like him because he was too self-conscious to speak his mind. Whenever he got drunk the shyness disappeared (for the most part) and he would say things that he normally wouldn't. You say your boyfriend is normally quiet, which makes me think the situation could be similar to my friends in the way that maybe he's just shy and can't work up the courage to say those things when he's sober. However, I don't recommend you take everything he says when he's drunk to heart. There's a big difference between complimenting you and saying that he's going to marry you someday. Maybe you should just talk to him about it, and if you haven't already ask him if he remembers saying those things to you.

Yeah I see what you mean. My boyfriend isn't cold though, he's just normal and nice when he is sober, and he still hugs me, kisses me, and is affectionate, but just not like when he's drunk. When he's drunk he is really romantic and sweet, and he said to me a couple of times sober that he wants to marry me. But he wouldn't go into detail. But when he is drunk he'll go into detail how much he wants to marry me. So it is hard to gauge. But I agree, it probably is some sort of shyness, because when I tell him about it the next day he doesn't deny it, or make up excuses, He'll just say "Yeah I remember what I said." And smiles. Lol. I think he is serious about what he says. Being drunk only strips him from his inhibitions

1. Does he ask for sex every time he's drunk?
2. Does he show similar affections / caring by actions when sober even if not in words
3. The above apart, logically there are many who are closed and clammed up while they lose their inhibitions when drunk.
4. Your guy could well be perceiving you as much beyond his league but grateful to have you as his girl hence he may not be saying things when sober cause he's afraid he may wind up saying something wrong. Explains his words when drunk / tipsy
5. Whichever way it's not BS :)
6. The very fact that when he's drunk, he's all over you complimenting and stuff and not doing that to other girls is a good sign :) <3

It's not BS but it's not real either. Drunkeness can sometimes bring out an alter ego--a whole different personality that's also in him but that he's not in touch with. If he sticks around long enough you'll probably see things you don't like about his other personality, but it seems like he's really outwardly sweet high energy and charismatic and very romantic. maybe you can talk to your boyfriend about being that way more when he's sober as well. he probably doesn't really realize the difference all that much because I'm like him and I honestly feel like an entirely different person when I'm drinking

Oh I see. Well when I mention to him about it the next day he says "Yeah, I remember what I said." and smiles. He doesn't deny or play the "I don't even remember" card. He admits to it. So, I don't know maybe it is how he truly feels, but he is just nice and normal with me sober, like he's not gushy or lovey dovey, but he's not cold, or tough, he's just quiet and hugs and kisses me, and says I love you, but when he's drunk he goes into a very lovey dovey mode. lol. While the thought of this may be present while in his sober state, he is clearly not considering it. It is more of a daydream really, or an imagination of marrying you. While his feelings of affection for you are for sure present, he may be unable to open up about this when he is sober

Well when he's sober he talks about marrying me, just not often, but when he's drunk he goes into a lot of detail about it, and looks like he is so in love with me. He just casual, nice and normal with me sober, like he'll still hug and kiss me and say I love you, but he's just not gushy like he is when he's drunk. Thanks for commenting! :)
