Can cuddling be platonic?

I apologize in advance for the length.
I went to a New Year's party with 4 other girls and 2 guys. We're almost positive that *sam* likes *Becca*. She doesn't want to relationship and he knows that, so his arm around her might be strictly a friendly thing. When his best friend *Jack* put his arm around Becca, he blocked his arm from touching her too much. Jack has even admitted to being a "manwhore". However, sam and becca were going to be New Year's kisses, but it didn't happen. He mentioned it, and she said, "oh well it doesn't matter really." Earlier in the night I mentioned I hadn't made out with anybody sober before. Sam offered I think jokingly even after setting his kiss with becca. fast forward and it's 4:00am and everybody is still up. I take a pillow and my blanket to take a nap in the back if the room. Sam asked to cuddle if i remember properly and I said okay. We spooned for maybe 20 minutes I dont remember, but I dont think it was for that long. When we were comfortable, he said "Happy new years *Kate*." I didn't know if he wanted me to turn and kiss him because that moment felt right. I ended up saying "happy new year" back. Another friend *Holly* joined in on our cuddle later jokingly. In the end he got up to get cushions for us to lay on, but there wasn't enough room for both of us i thought so I stopped. After we were done people looked sort of pissed at us because I too ship sam and becca, but i knew they weren't going to happen. We cuddled twice more and each time he was the one to get up. He didn't show any signs of feeling uncomfortable, he just wanted food or needed to use the restroom. We all slept in different places that night. The cuddling could have been just a comforting thing, but I do believe the possibility of something more in the future. He is not one to act without thinking.
