Everytime you compliment her, she says "Oh thats not true" and "Stop lying" and stuff like that.
It gets very annoying and frustrating.
You'd get mad at her for just not seeing how fucking beautiful she is.
Now put yourself in his shoes. Think about it. He tells you he likes you and he got mad because he wanted you to accept his compliment. He wouldn't compliment you if he didn't mean it after admitting to feeling SOMETHING for you.
Because you keep putting yourself down. If someone was having a convo like that with me, I'd stop talking to them. It's just a way of you trying to get more attention and compliments. You may not think so, but to him that's how it sounds. It's okay to be playful and joke around, but don't be annoying about it. He got defensive because he didn't want to have a conversation based on you putting yourself down the whole time.
When boys tell you X, they generally won't have the patience for repeated bouts of "B-b-b-but wait, no, it's really not X, right?"
Especially over text, where there's no chance for all the non-verbal ways of shutting this sort of thing down. What's he gna do?
Unless proven otherwise, you should just operate on the assumption that he actually means what he says. Ikr? Totally crazy idea.
Because you are throwing your insecurity out there which is awkward and uncomfortable and its obvious you're looking for reassurance and no one wants to be with someone that throws constant pity parties and always needs to be told that they're attractive.
Maybe you should do role reversal on this one... Pretend you are the light green and the girl that has a crush or guy on you is saying the dark green to you.

He probably got annoyed because it sounds like you're
1. Fishing for compliments
2. Basically giving him reason to NOT like you, and pushing him away from the idea. Which could in turn make him think that you no longer feel for him that way, and is your way of ensuring he doesn't get hurt.
"A little something", is probably not true. He got mad because he really likes you and doesn't want you thinking of yourself like that. Even if I'm wrong, and he doesn't like you, he still doesn't want you saying those things about yourself, and it makes him sad to know you do.
He's not mad at you, believe me. He's probably mad at himself, but I don't know what for.
Sounds like to some extent he finds you attractive, so keeping that in mind he maybe doesn't have any patience for you trying to say otherwise if that makes sense. I've had similiar conversations with guys, I can't get why they'd talk to me, but I've learned just to bite my tongue now because being that insecure (especially at the start of a potential relationship) often just doesn't come off well.
It's a turn off for guys when women are insecure. Your saying it with lol but he doesn't find it funny at all especially when he told you your not. This could be a big part if why you two are not dating. No guy wants to hear a girl calling themselves ugly almost all the time. After a certain point he can't say anything else if she feels how she does.

Well I mean you're invalidating him. Imagine if you told a guy you liked him and 5 minutes later he was complaining that nobody likes him. You'd probably be pretty annoyed that they're disregarding your opinion.

I hate when girls do this. Not only is this level of insecurity a turn-off, it also feels like I'm being called a liar when I'm obviously interested and told her I like her. Also I think it can be seen as quite attention seeking and immature.
