It very well can mean something. If you lock eyes it's generally a sign of mutual attraction and can mean a lot. Locking eyes can mean more than words and it is easier to read one's intentions and what they think about you through their eyes. Also who initiated eye contact?
Prolonged eye contact is when you observe the other person and listens to his/her body language and you are both communicating. It does not mean anything. The contents of that he/she says verbally/non-verbally is what matters.
if i lock eyes with someone either i think they're cute or they might look familiat to me or there could be something about them that catches my attention that doesn't relate to romantic interest. This is of course assuming they're someone i don't know
Could be flirty, could be attraction, could be friendly liking, could just be something that person always does. Some people are just good with eye contact, with everyone.
