Why would a guy ghost a girl when he expressed so much interest? Please help! Best answer given to the first person who has a decent response?

This guy I met through a friend seemed like he was really into me. We talked for hours and he told me to call him later as well. We talked on the phone later and once we hung up he started texting me. He is an attorney at a big law firm and has a really busy schedule, but he still made the time to text me throughout the day. When I finally stopped and told him to get to work, he told me to make sure to text him later. I did that and we ended the day with him texting me after work, before going to bed. When I texted him the next day, he just stopped responding. I sent him two texts during that week but he didn't respond to either one. Finally, I sent him a last text the following week telling him if he didn't want to talk, it was totally fine by me. I told him we were both adults and he just needed to let me know so I could stop wasting both of our time.

He responded with a huge text saying he was having a family emergency and his mother was in the hospital. He said he'd try to call the next day and even took the time to address all my other texts. Well, I told him to focus on family and don't worry about contacting me until afterwards. I told him I understood and messaged him maybe twice the entire month just to check up on him. Well, present day, it has been over two months but no word from him. Why would he ghost me if he was the one who initiated most of the contact and seemed so interested? And when I gave him a way out, why didn't he take it? I noticed he hasn't logged into facebook in over two months either, but for some reason, I get this gut feeling that he made up the information about the family emergency. I just don't understand why a guy would feel the need to do this.
