Very easy answer:
1. Female standards are an all time high. Where 5 think their 8 and won't settle for less. Many of them are also fine being FWB/booty call for these men and/or being one many girls for rich men to use at their own discretion.
2. Male standards are very low these days both due to being raise by single mothers (no masculine figure) or having pathetic fathers. Some of it is also social agenda of movies which constantly tell them THAT MEN need to prove their worth to women and how you as a MAN are less valuable by default. So the mentality many men have is to put pussy on a pedestal. So a guy who is a 6/10 actually considers himself lower than a girl who is a 4/10 in looks. A guy who is a 7/10 will think he deserves a girl who is a 5/10.
3. Many men have come to realise that attractive women 8/10+ are more trouble than their worth and women are far more loyal and appreciative if you are the better partner in looks than them. The reason being hypergamy. If to a woman she thinks you are the best she can get then she will be loyal to you. Thus a 5/10 in a relationship with a 8/10 will be loyal. As appose to a 8/10 female with an 8/10 male will never truly be loyal as she will think she deserve a 10/10 male in the back of her head and if such male shows interest in her will either cheat or leave.
They go for what they want I guess, personally only go for girls many would consider more attractive than me, I'm about a 6 I'd say (I shave my head from a condition to to some I'm a 2 others I'm an 8 you know what I mean it's a polarizing trait) and the lowest I would date is a 7-8 looks wise, personality matters slot too but I still hold this standards high as well. Maybe it's because it's easier and less rejection going for less attractive to them but to me a couple more rejections is worth it given eventually one good looking girl will say yes.
ugly women are called "baza" in my country. which means construction site trash. we have a saying that goes like: 'if you dont "bazise" you can't build'. which means you have to start with ugly women and lower your standards to build your way up to the hot ones... .
Guys nowadays give much more attention to average girls, because they think that pretty girls are bathing in attention, which isn't true.

Because a lot of men today are super cowardly, and are afraid to approach the very attractive women out of assumptions that they'll be mean or whatever else. The loneliest women today are the most attractive ones
well for me it's all about the personality , if a good personality and good looks combined it's of course a good combination but good looks with bad personality is a turn off for me
Because average to ok looking girls, are almost always wife material. I've yet to meet a very attractive girl that didn't like all the attention she gets, and of course they take advantage of it.

It depends on the demographic and where you live. In rural areas this is common, in cities not so much.
