Why won't my guy friend talk to me much anymore?

Me and my guy friend have been friends for about three months. We got close very quickly, and since we have practically been best friends. In the beginning he never really showed signs of being more-than-friends interested, but we texted a LOT. All day everyday, and if I didn't reply he would double text. He would text me big paragraphs when I was sad and always responded fast. Since about a month ago he began acting different. He would compliment me all the time, he always wanted to hang out and sent cute pictures and sent a love poem... the thing is I got scared he liked me as I did like him too but didn't know how to react and played dumb. He told me he was working his ass off for a girl and liked her a lot but never told me who. After a bit I harassed him and 'made him' admit it was another girl (weird situation), but it didn't seem like he liked her too much. He even told me recently he isn't going for anyone.
He hit a point where he still showed subtle signs of liking me but not too much, but the only different was since he has been distant. He doesn't text me, sometimes leaves me on read, doesn't reply fast, sometimes won't even open my messages... I feel so pushed away and it's making me sad. Been like this about two weeks and only gets worse. We hung out Saturday and he was fine, always kept close and was acting cute, played love songs, and when we were done he texted me saying he wouldn't have spent the day with anyone else. I thought maybe he would be different but no. He is ignoring again, left me on read more than once, he doesn't text me paragraphs now but short replies when I'm upset.

What is happening? Why is it before he was clingy and what not he texted a lot but now he is and he stopped communication with me unless we hangout?:( I feel so distant I miss him

Today we talked a bit today and it seems to me he was fishing for compliments from me or testing my reaction. It worked.
