Guys, why might a male friend insists on paying for dinner?

Anonymous
I invited him out to dinner and chose the restaurant. It was of moderate pricing that we both could afford. When the bill came, I began to take out my wallet but he told me not to worry about it. I let him know we could get separate checks and simply pay our share, but he insisted on paying. The bill ended up coming out to 60$ and change so I felt awful having him pay all of that!

My friend probably noticed my concern, telling me that he'll pick a day and we'll go out for dessert and I can take care of us then... But dessert is ridiculously cheap... nowhere near the amount he paid. A part of me feels guilty for inviting him there because I was expecting us to split the check. I'm grateful for his kindness, but I don't understand why anyone would pick up a tab that large. We're both in college and I'm aware that he has been worrying about money lately, so I'm not sure why he did it. We aren't dating and he's not interested in me, so he just felt the need to be extremely kind?
