What Is ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response)?

ASMR or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is a pleasurable phenomenon that is hard to explain to those who do not experience it. It's a feeling that starts at the back of your scalp and buzzes down your neck into your back and into the rest of the body.

First Time

My First encounter with ASMR was as a child growing up. In kindgergarten I would experience this as the teacher read from childrens books. Though I did not pay mind to what I was feeling, The only peculiar thing I noticed was listening to a calm almost whispering voice that sent me in a trance-like state.

Triggers

These triggers can be sounds of people gently whispering, tapping on objects, or using their hands such as watching someone paint or carve wood with incredible focus at the task at hand.Triggers are numerous and whoever experiences ASMR has different triggers that stimulate them.

Who Gets ASMR?

It’s hard to tell exactly who experiences ASMR. Those who do experience ASMR don't usually speak about it. Many people believe that this is a normal reaction that happens to everyone, but upon realizing that most people don’t experience this they feel weird especially when they try explaining to others about the feeling. They may even feel like a freak in some cases.

Give It A Try

If you believe you experience ASMR, there is a vast collection of videos on Youtube you can experiment on to find triggers that work for you. Just search 'ASMR' and start listening away. It helps that you are in a relaxed state of mind, use headphones or earphones and it's best not to force it.

Below is a Youtuber that just seems to have the right tone of whispers that help me experience ASMR I will also link different types of videos to which you might have luck on.

3 years ago a friend linked an ASMR video to me. Realizing that I was not alone and this feeling had a name was quite the revelatory experience for me. If you have ASMR and you weren't aware of what you were feeling I hope this helped you better understand what you were feeling after all these years as well.
