Smoothies can be used as a snack. I wouldn't go for the protein shakes too often unless you're working out and burning a lot of calories and trying to gain more muscle. They aren't meant to be drank everyday just for a snack.

Both. My nutritionist has me make them whole for breakfast and then I drink half of a smoothie made in the blender if I want it for a snack. :)

They're designed to fill you up the way a meal would. So, yeah.
If you're trying to lose weight, they can often be meal replacements. Some guys also take them to help them bulk up and get more nutrients. It depends on what your goals are.
Usually the smoothies are meal replacement. Protein shakes are to be taken only when training.
Depends on the calories in the shake & your daily calorie count.
