I was in the store with my little sister when I overheard a woman saying this--"I just don't think black girls are pretty. Their hair is just a mess with all that weave and they are often overweight."

And I was just like, "What the crap woman?!"

Then she kept speaking and saying all these horrible things while her friends laughed and encouraged her. I just couldn't believe my ears. Why would she say something so awful like that? It hurt me though, because I'm a black girl and people tell me all the time that black girls are often not viewed as beautiful. Because of this, I am often ashamed of who I am.

Really? Don't be, hon. There is nothing wrong with us. There are plenty of beautifui black women around. She is just a prejudice woman and that's her opinion. You yourself know that when we wear weaves our hair looks nice and its our natural hair that most of us don't like and she just said the weave looks all mess up. You know that's not true because there are a lot of pretty black women who have great hair weaves like celebrities and just regular women who go to the shop to get there hair done. Even some white people wear hir extentions to make there hair longer and prettier and some have bad weaves an d some have good ones. It doesn't matter what race but black women wear weave more because we are brainwashed to beleive that our natural hair is not beautiful. So regardless of what you been hearing, we are beautiful. those people are ignorant and haven't been out everywhere to see that there are beautiful black women around. Look at the music videos, plenty. Our bodies have more shape and we have the booty unlike other races who rarely dont. we are thick and men love thick women especiall black men. Its just the people you are around who don't know but what they see in thier community. That is a small window. when you get out and about and own your own if you are not already cause your under 18, you will start to see more and more of black women that re beautiful. But, no hon, you have nothing to be ashamed about. Do not listen to what others are saying.

It's a shame that people are still confusing predictive stereotypes with individual traits. Technically it's true that black people are more likely to be overweight than any other ethnic or racial group in the U.S. (as reported in a study released yesterday, coincidentally). However, this is not a statistic that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of any singular member of the overall group. People seem to think this means that any one person must be in alignment with the overall statistics, and that's mathematically absurd.

Cultural factors such as hair weaves may create a broader base for unattractiveness for a group of people (for those people who dislike weaves), but they still aren't adequate grounds for expanding the dislike to an entire race of people.

This is the exact reason why one of my goals in life is to start an organization/foundation strictly dedicated to raising little black girls to be proud of who they are, not only physically but proud of their heritage. It's ashame little black girls are subliminally taught to hate what they see in the mirror. I would never allow the opinion of some woman from another race make me to feel inferior to society's standard of beauty smh. Maybe I feel this way because I went to a private (black) school where we learned about black history longer than 28 days out of the year or maybe it's because I was raised in an all black church where I saw intelligent and beautiful black women all the time. I make sure to tell my little cousins how pretty they are and how much I love their naturally kinky hair. It's ashame that white people (no offense) have been able to brainwash the whole world into thinking how they look is perfection. Bleaching creams are very popular in Africa, India, and some Latin countries (and growing in popularity here in America) for this very reason.

There are a lot of people who think black women are exquisite - why not let that opinion dictate how you feel about yourself?

Being mixed, I often get mixed reviews on how I look. Some people think I'm gorgeous, some people don't have an opinion, and others find me absolutely unattractive. No skin off my back because I feel the same way about others myself.

Majority doesn't rule when it comes to personal preferences - only one opinion should matter when it comes to you, and that's your own.

That is just cruel...not everyone is going to find everyone else attractive, but to say that about a whole race and laugh about it... it makes you wonder if they really do think black women are unattractive or if there is something about them that they envy. Personally, I have always found soo many black girls and women to be absolutely gorgeous.

And as far as the hair thing goes... I have always sympathized. I have Jewish girl curls... they're a bit wavy and turn into ringlets at the bottom and I have always found THOSE to be hard to manage, let alone hair that is any coarser. Black women work hard on their hair (however, I love when they let it go natural into an afro or they shave it down real short) and blond haired white women whose hair has absolutely no shape to it just don't understand and it makes me so angry when they feel like they have a right to make any comments.

I normally don't comment on older posts but this is so sad. All I can say is you can always find your haters, especially if you are looking for them. Girls post on here about feeling ugly because of their weight or their race or just having been told they are unattractive. Rock who you are. The most attractive quality I have seen is confidence and I have met many people that do not fit the mold of classically attractive but they are considered to be so and are popular because they love who they are.

that's so mean of her to say. and I believe what she is saying is totally untrue. there are many fashion models out there who are black and her words have no justification at all. it just sounds like maybe she's a very narrowminded person and can't think or see things that are out there in the world. some people are very bigotted or just biased, their statements hold no necessary meaning in what they speak. Don't be ashamed of who you are. Ignore them. Race shouldn't be an issue. I am a white woman and when I lived in China for a while I overheard some women say all western women were fat. That's just a culture thing.

I was deeply hurt at the time, but I got over it because they weren't much to look at either and I said do I look like most western women. They were left with their mouths open and other people would say western women are beautiful.

So what it's their opinion if I’d been you I would have said excuse me and told them exactly what for.

They soon would have stopped.
