You should join track & field.
From my experience, cross country takes a lot longer than track & field, simply because the events are longer. And at my school, they do all these running camps and etc. and the track people are a little more chill.
Also, while many XC people are thin, yes, normally they are very skinny, not necessarily "attractive" skinny. Normally the really good track runners are slim but toned, which is pretty much the ideal body type. Plus, even if you aren't the best runner, as long as you try hard the coaches should be fine. And you can try out some field events too. And at least in my track, we talk a lot while running by the way
Run tomorrow, maybe try some sprints, see how it feels. I personally love sprinting, you may not, but just try running some 200s.

Was pudgy, joined cross-country in middle school. Have been skinny as death ever since and wouldn't change it for all the beef in Texas.
Being slender and able to move around quickly (even if not top-tier) has never failed to serve me well, and the interesting scenery that I could explore while running kept practices interesting, where circuits bore the life out of me.
