As recently as a hundred years ago (or even less, actually) bacterial pneumonia was one of the leading causes of death. That was before the advent of antibiotics, which have saved countless lives from previously-fatal bacterial infections. Sadly, today, we're in danger of returning to a pre-antibiotic era because of the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains. That is largely due to the over-prescribing of antibiotics for minor illnesses, and the widespread administration of antibiotics to poultry and livestock to artificially boost weight gain and help the animals survive the filthy conditions of factory farms. Bacteria mutate, and transmit their mutations, very rapidly. When they are over-exposed to antibiotics they mutate faster. Antibiotic drugs were a godsend for human health, but we have misused them.
Well it clearly depends on the thing being treated. For many things, western medicine is the best approach. For many other, they clearly just mask symptoms. As I always say, I've cleared some 30 or so lingering, at times, very affecting of my well being, symptoms, through meditation. Unfortunately, we've created a false dichotomy, by suggesting that all ancient knowledge pertaining to health is somehow superstitious. The real problem is, through hyper analysis, we've lost the ability to synthesise and use artistic knowledge IE knowledge that never professed to be exactly right, but sometimes yields better results when dealing with the human condition. Their homespun and 'primitive ' wisdom wouldn't allow us to get in the physically effete state many of us are now in.
I don't think they cure the disease, but they do counteract it for short period. My mother is schizophrenic & her medicine really helps her & makes a huge difference. I guess when she first turned schizophrenic she thought she saw dead people, couldn't sleep, & other stuff. But now she doesn't have trouble with these things, but she does suffer from anxiety/depression. I don't know if that has anything to do with her schizophrenia or if those are just other issues she has. Also, my niece has ADD, & her medicine really helps her, so she calms down enough to do her homework, etc. I on the other hand have mild anxiety & take medicine for it, but I don't feel it really helps much. But then again, maybe it is helping, but I just don't notice... who knows.

Most drugs treat symptom, mask a problem or interact with a condition acting like a catalyst. Disease is not defined.

Most are for control/treating a disease but some drugs such as penicillin cure a sickness.
