Should I have called an ambulance? I was terrified of the $1400 fee they charge!?

I know all is said and done, but this week I woke up in the worse pain of my entire life. I thought it was just the feeling of heart break in my gut, but no... This pain spread from my pelvic area up my left side. It quickly graduated to projectile vomiting. I knew it wasn't my appendix and to be completely honest I seriously thought my kidney was failing me. This was at 7:00am. I knew I needed to go to the emergency room, but my dad was out of town, my mom was an hour away working, and no one else picked up their phones that early. I sat for almost two hours in excruciating pain waiting for my mom to come back home. When she got here I was just sprawled out on the bathroom floor. By the time I was able to get any medical attention it was 10:20am. I spent 5hrs in the er with I. V. bags hooked up to my arm :/

It turns out I have a kidney infection and stones that need to pass. Everyone keeps telling me that I should have called the ambulance, but in fear of the cost I waited in pain. It felt like someone was stabbing me in the side, but I could not afford the bill. I'm so fearful the pain will return, because there is a real chance that it might. Should I just call an ambulance if something like this happens again? I wasn't bleeding out or anything... unless you count the blood I peed :/
