How embarrassing is it that I don't know how to ride a bike?

I've always been extremely insecure about it and felt like if people found out I would be a complete idiot to everyone. I feel like I would be looked at like I have the bubonic plague.

It's kind of sad (not pathetic, but actually sad) as that is usually a fond childhood memory, but it shouldn't be embarrassing. Once you are an adult, bike riding is pretty irrelevant. I don't think people would look at you as if you had the plague, they would just assume you had a shitty childhood. You can always learn if you care enough about it.

Now, swimming... that should really be learned by everyone. That can actually save your life.

I'm big on swimming so I definitely have that one down pat! But I know a lot people who can't swim but I've never met anyone who can't ride a bike or maybe they're just embarrassed like me. But I mean I've tried to teach myself but my parents never tried to teach me as a child. For some reason I just can't balance myself at all. I try whenever I can find a day off. I just get worried because I live in an area with a lot of bike riding areas and every day I see tons of people riding in literally "Bikes only" areas and just feel so ashamed.

Not everyone gets a chance to even ride a bike. And some people are not interested in learning hot to ride it. Because of that there is no reason to feel embarrassed about not knowing how to ride a bike.

I'm the same way. I grew up extremely poor so I never owned a bike. People know I can't ride one, and they've asked why I don't learn. I don't because I am 28. Won't it look ridiculous for a 28 year old to be trying to learn how to ride a bike? What would people think?

I had a bike but I just had parents who never gave me the time of day. It's really hard, I've tried to learn since high school (the gym class had bikes and we were supposed to ride them so I really wanted to learn before all of that) and I just can't seem to get it! I've told a few people and they've said the same things! And then "I'll teach you" but they don't. I've tried in abandoned areas where I see no one. If you want to try Id look for empty warehouses off the grid to try in the parking lot. I hope you do learn how! It sucks because what if a guy wants to take us out on a surprise date and it's mountain bike riding or something! Or if we have kids I don't want mine going through this fear! Thank you for posting your story it really made me feel a little bit better knowing there is someone else out there who doesn't know how to either!

You should not feel embarrassed. Some people just did not learn its okay. I don't see people riding bikes in the park that much. I learn when I was about 5 years old.

I've tried, my parents never taught me growing up. In high school I bought a bike and tried to learn, I mean how hard can it be? All I have to do is put my feet on the pedals and push! Well apparently I don't have balance at all, my mother then suggested training wheels! I've been trying to teach myself without training wheels ever since. I seriously think it's becoming impossible and I'm running out of non public places to try.
