It will damage it no matter what you do. Chemical dye contains hydrogen peroxide and ammonia and both of them are very harmful for your hair.
But you can minimize the damage by using leave in conditioners, various types of oils, and by touching up your roots once every 3 months instead of once a month. If your hair starts looking brassy you can counteract it with a toner.
Oh and don't forget that auburn dye may eventually fade, so you have to be twice careful.
Good luck.

if you have previously untreated hair, it shouldn't do too much damage, remember to condition though :)
when i first dyed my hair red (i had to bleach it too), there was little visible, if any damage at all, but don't repeatedly dye it
I think you should accept your natural hair color because dyes and bleaches are simply not good for your hair. At the end of the day your hairdresser wants you to do it because they make a lot of money on it. ;) Just keep that in mind.
not at all... but u must use verified and not random hair products :)

yes it will damage it because to get a lighter colour you have to bleach it or use a high lift dye.
you can only go darker without damage (using semi permanent natural shades)going from black hair to anything will damage your hair but if you go to a professional they can do a good job damaging your hair less.
Dying your hair won't permanently damage it, that only happens when you over dye it, mainly with bleach as that causes the hair to dry and split, like if you use hair dryers or straighteners too much.
Dying your hair will damage it, no matter what.
