if kids cannot get healthy food at home for whatever reason, (maybe the parents don't give a shit or just don't know any better or are poor and can't afford fresh produce), they should at least get to eat healthy in school. a well balanced meal will keep a kid full longer and with less cravings than just some mac&cheese. All processed foods are basically bad for you. It is a fact.
Americas obesity epidemic has gotten out of hand anyway, so this is just one way to do something about it. And I applaud her for it!!
I also think vending machines with chips and sodas should be banned from schools. there should be healthy options. Kids can always stuff their face with crap once they are home.
I get the impression that most americans think, that just because something is sold, it is safe to eat. Well no. It does make a big difference if those 600kcal you just had were from chips or from broccoli.
It is the only country who has had the brilliant idea of inventing the "fat gene", this way they are taking away even more personal responsibility from people. There is no fat gene. there are people who will assimilate more than others, but no one is fat out of the womb. This comes only with wrong nutrition and lack of excercise. (well there are fat babies, but the mothers are usually obese or heavily overweight)
Don't get me wrong, I love the US, but everytime I go there I am in shock about the horrendous serving sizes you use. I mean 40 oz coke, with refill? Bucket sized popcorn... Everything is horribly exagerated and big. It's almost like if you don't leave something in your plate because otherwise you have a gastric shock, it was not enough. I always hear about American Tourists in Switzerland who complain about the serving sizes... well, people, those are normal quantities! Why you think most Europeans are slim?

Swiss. You guys are lucky. Mandatory military service for citizenship. An actual free Republic. The counterparts of the civilian populace and military organization are in harmony. As I understand it, your country is peaceful, people have sub-machine guns in their closets. It's all out in the open and everyone is chill about it. Being a land-locked country, the populace being so well-armed and organized, Hitler skipped over it.
In the U. S., the government makes policies that are not scientifically literate, militarize the police and enforce their unfounded laws against citizens. There are people who make money from having a 1/4 of the world's incarcerated population here and the U. S. is 5% of the world population. There's a plutocracy but they have trouble being honest about.
Pharmaceuticals get to make money off prescribing anti-depressants bad for the mind and soul, but enforce diet standards. They do not practice policy for the health of citizens across the board. This is an insult.
I'm angry cause you're right. Hahaha. People here eat high-carbohydrate, high-saturated fat foods before going to sleep, never exercise. Instead, this program hopefully teaches children that whole, unprocessed foods are a better option in terms of health and staying fuller longer. Yeah, America has a lot of fatties.
A lot of the kids who et school lunch only eat school lunch or they go home and eat food they got from a convenience store due to poverty. If they're only getting one meal a day we need to give them dense calorie protein and slow burning grains so at the very least they're fuller longer. Instead of over processed microwaved meat parties and white bread that burns off in about 20mins.
Because the kids don't get great meals at home (if they do get them) they're not taught healthy eating habits. They don't know what a balanced meal looks like so if they do grow up and get out of poverty thy don't know how to help their kids fight things like obesity.
It's a school the point is to teach kids about helpful real life habits and healthy eating is one of them. If you wan Oreos or whatever you can bring them, you can even buy them from other kids. But to the kids that get free lunch and are stuck they deserve the best option possible.
If are youth are really so important then I think they're more important than pink slime slapped on a plate.
I currently work in a convenience store. 90% of what we sell is unhealthy and downright lethal if consumed regularly. Tobacco, alcohol, coffee, junk food, gambling, lottery tickets. All of it is also addictive.
And people keep buying it. I sell cigarettes to people I can see should quit smoking (okay, everyone should). I sell alcohol to alcoholics. I place bets for people with a gambling problem. I sell junk food to fat people.
Capitalism is not geared towards health. It never was. There are bucks to be made and everyone is playing.
It's depressing.
I don't think the government needs to micro-manage every aspect of our lives, so no.

school is about education and education shouldn't be limited to books. children should and need to learn about proper and adequate diet and nutrition. Parents can still send their children to school with whatever they want so it's not like the children can't have cookies.
health isn't only something that affects individuals. as numbers of unhealthy decrease so do health care costs, taxes, and health insurance so really we all should be pro nutrition particularly in children
The food cooperation so are to blame for child obesity. And some schools in America provide fast foods like McDonalds and Pizza Hut at lunch time. That's crazy. While there is a healthy option and a fatty option kids are always going to choose the fatty tastier option.
Take away their choice and kids will eat healthier. Bring back the old cooked foods in school not the processed.
We elect government officials to decide what is best for us. If we didn't want the government governing us, then we could just live in anarchy.
I think it's great that Michelle Obama is trying to do something about all the fat children.
There was an issue about the fact athletes were not getting enough calories because they had a max calorie amount that wasn't enough for people that exercised a lot so schools kind of just ignored what Michelle was saying after awhile when athletes parents made threats about suing them for malnutrition. Yeah Michelle's food policy completely crashed in burned in a lot of places. She tried to be active in policy making as the first wife but she just didn't have what it took.
tired of the government thinking they can poke their heads into everything.
Watermelon is actually something people who are anorexic will eat.
If their lunches don't have enough calories they will just come home and continue eating, or eating more than they would if their lunches has enough calories.
it's not about the amount of calories. there are good calories and empty ones.
Take chips for example, you get easily 500-700kcal out of a small bag, but nutritionwise cero benefits. After half an hour you'll feel hungry and craving again.
Take the same calories in vegetables and grains: not only are you getting a lot of nutrients, but the low glycemic index of those foods will keep blood sugar at a steady rate and having you feeling full and cravings free for hours.
