Don't ask for medicine. They hand that stuff out too easily. And yes you should be concerned about side effects. Some of that stuff is pretty nasty.
On the other hand, if your condition is serious, then you need to do something. Medicine might actually be helpful. There needs to be a balance between doctors handing that stuff out like candy, and using it when it's really needed. It might be the best thing for you.
A concern about side effects should not translate to fear of using it when it's needed. The side effects only affect some people, and most are reversible when medication is stopped.
If you talk to a psychiatrist, let them know your concerns. If they think medicine will help, ask for the minimum dose over a trial period. Please don't live a miserable life because you are afraid of side effects. Caution is one thing. Being miserable from fear of the medicine might is quite another. So be cautious, but give yourself a chance to feel better.
