It's one thing to support someone who is overweight/obese and help them make better choices, and another to insult them and make them feel like shit about themselves.
The thing with shame is just that - it makes people feel ashamed. Most people (not all, but most) who are overweight have some problem with overeating, whether it's because of depression or it is just a mechanism they use to cope with stress. When you shame someone, that does not help them, but instead drives them to eat more.
People who fat shame often put others in a box, without paying any mind to each individual's story. A man who is 300 pounds could have a debilitating disease that prevents him from exercising. A slightly overweight girl could be recovering from an eating disorder. You just don't know. That's what it's unfair to shame people for their weight.

Surprisingly, it's apparently not common sense. There a multitudes of people buying into the fallacy that being fat can also be healthy.
Fatshaming is the term being applied to any action that defies the idea that fat is good.
People are just being supportive.
A. K. A. People are just being People. :P
Just wait til' Caitlyn dyes her hair or something, the fat topic will go away.
Then we can talk about how ugly or how pretty 'her' hair looks ! ;P
It should be common sense, but no not everyone acknowledges obesity is a problem.

I guess for some, it's the approach. Most are well aware they are overweight. There are many factors as to why someone is, and that's why generalizing all people isn't right. Medications, medical issues and illnesses can make someone gain weight, and very difficult to lose. Some people do diet and exercise but there isn't much of a change. Their cholesterol, blood pressure, and other vitals might be good, but they are still overweight (I used to volunteer at a hospital and have seen this).
Now for the ones just being gluttonous and lazy... yeah that's on them. It is very unhealthy and dangerous and they should seek help in getting more exercise and eating better. If people had positive, good support they can do it. But some people don't have that, and everyone deals with struggles differently (some binge eat for instance). Some people might not have proper education in certain areas as well.People skinny shame as well.
Its all stupid in my opinion.Fat shaming can be motivational though no? It is a governmental/political problem as well and thus a lot of people vent their frustrations through fat shaming.
I agree. Health is a personal matter
