I think it is fine from time to time but you may want to be careful about over doing it and relying on medications to sleep. For something like Diphenhydramine the max daly dose is something crazy like 300 mg when you usually only need 25-50mg to help you sleep. The problem with medication induced sleep is that it can be less effective than a more natural sleep. There are plenty of studies on insomnia you can look into most of time time you can fix things my simply changing a few habits you have.
You may also want to look into teas, there are quite a few on the market that can help you sleep as a stepping stone between medications and needing nothing.

I also take melatonin since my work schedule requires me to sleep during the day. I have had no problems with it. All though I do get more vivid dreams, but that's not bad.
I don't take sleeping medication but my sleep key is a cup of mint tea with a few drops of liquid melatonin and liquid ionic magnesium. The magnesium creates a calming effect. I've also found it really helps to create the right sleeping environment. Memory foam pillows are a great investment. I splurged on six of them and I get in the craziest positions with them when bedtime comes around! A small electrical water fountain can be very tranquil and help you fall into sleep as well. Using a wax melter with a familiar, cozy scent may help too or a humidifier with an oil diffuser.
