I want to be a bartender?

Hi,

I'm 18 years old and I've always wanted to be a Bartender I noticed someone else has this question but is underage where I'm not .

I'm currently unemployed but have worked in Restaurants but I want to get to the drink side :) I have no experience in being a Bartender so how do I go about becoming one, Employers are looking for Experienced people with Qualifications where I don't have that and it doesn't look like anyone's giving me a chance to see how good I could become.

Most pubs over here will employ front of house staff even if they are under 18. Albeit it will just be serving food. Its worth trying your luck in places more family orientated than old mens boozers. You mentioned you worked in restaurants, well its unusual these days to have a place that only serves drinks, most pubs do cater for food as well and this might go in your favour. You could ask once you've got your foot in the door to do more bar work, but chances are if its a busy pub you'll be doing a bit anyway even if you are mainly employed as a waitress.

Also another good place to try is your local college for a hospitality course. Some courses might actually set you up with somewhere to work, make the most of it while you are 18 because you still qualify for free or reduced rates at college. This would help your chances a bit, but more than anything it sounds like you just need to re-jig your CV a bit. Best of luck.

Some countries have lower drinking age such as australia where 18 is legal to drink and to serve, all you need is a rsa (responsible service of alchol ) certificate plus bar tenders course optional and you can find work easy especially in certian places like th gold coast in queensland lots of students and backpackers get jobs in nightclubs, pubs even without experience lot of it cash in hand. In europe drinking ages legal vary from 14 to 18. With your experience in food you could get a job oseas especially in the uk where geting a job in a pub is part of the backpacker experience easy to get a visa for oseas experiencce when you are under 30 yo.

Working holiday can be fun and you can beat the age restictions if there are any in your country
